PLAYER NOTES

--WR Santana Moss topped 1,000 receiving yards for the second time in his four years with the Redskins and also passed Michael Westbrook for eighth on Washington's all-time receiving list with 279 catches.

--QB Jason Campbell's 3,245 passing yards were the most by a Redskin since Brad Johnson threw for 4,005 in 1999.

--TE Chris Cooley set Redskins records for his position with a team-high 83 catches and 849 yards.

--DE Andre Carter's team-high four sacks were the lowest team-leading figure since sacks became an official statistic in 1982.

--WR Antwaan Randle El set career highs with 53 catches and four receiving touchdowns.

REPORT CARD VS. 49ERS

PASSING OFFENSE: C-minus -- Campbell didn't pass as well as he ran in completing a second half of the season in which he regressed after a dynamic start. He badly missed a wide-open Santana Moss for a sure touchdown and didn't connect on a pass over 17 yards. Moss led the way with six catches for 68 yards while Antwaan Randle El powered into the end zone for a touchdown. Stephon Heyer, starting for injured left tackle Chris Samuels, had a bad day blocking Justin Smith.

RUSHING OFFENSE: C-minus -- Clinton Portis had a fine season, but his rough second half ended with just 80 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries as well as a critical third quarter fumble that opened the door for the 49ers' comeback from a 17-7 deficit. Quarterback Jason Campbell ran with the most authority of his 36 career starts. He dove into the end zone for a 2-yard score with 69 seconds left.

PASS DEFENSE: C -- When the 49ers got the ball with 14:04 left, Hill had passed for just 82 yards and had had a ball picked off by cornerback Carlos Rogers. On the ensuing drive, Hill was 6-for-7 for 78 yards including the go-ahead touchdown to Jason Hill against Fred Smoot. DeAngelo Hall made a huge early third-down stop on Isaac Bruce. Shawn Springs and Kareem Moore botched the coverage on Bryant Johnson 24-yard catch, which set up Joe Nedney's game-winning, last-second field goal. Right end Andre Carter won the team sacks title with his fourth.

RUSH DEFENSE: C-minus -- When Frank Gore and DeShaun Foster ripped off runs of 7, 5 and 9 yards on three of the first four plays, one could tell the Redskins' eighth-ranked run defense wasn't going to have a strong afternoon. Washington didn't handle Gore running from the Wildcat formation well and didn't touch quarterback Shaun Hill on his touchdown run. Middle linebacker London Fletcher was all over the field with a team-high nine tackles.

SPECIAL TEAMS: B-minus -- Rock Cartwright finished a strong season on kickoff returns with a robust 38.6-yard average against the Niners. Randle El struggled yet again on punt returns. The punt team allowed a critical 35-yard return by Allen Rossum, hurting punter Ryan Plackemeier's 45.6 gross average. Plackemeier also nearly had a kick blocked. The kickoff coverage was fine. Kicker Shaun Suisham had a rare recent success over 40 yards, nailing a 41-yarder.

COACHING: C -- With only a winning record vs. a .500 finish to play for, the Redskins had their usual poor first quarter but responded with a 17-point second quarter to take command. However, they had another fourth quarter collapse, a problem that was all too common during the 2-6 second half of the season that turned their 6-2 start into an 8-8 finish.
