REPORT CARD VS. COWBOYS

PASSING OFFENSE: C-minus -- On coach Jim Zorn's orders, Campbell kept throwing short passes in the flat to little effect. Campbell completed 22 passes but for just 162 yards. Top receiver Santana Moss caught five passes but for only 29 yards. Tight end Chris Cooley had seven catches for only 47 yards. Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware beat left tackle Chris Samuels for a sack in a sixth straight game and defensive tackle Jay Ratliff had sacks against center Casey Rabach and right guard Randy Thomas. Fullback Mike Sellers had his first touchdown catch.

RUSHING OFFENSE: B-plus -- Clinton Portis warmed up effectively enough that he started despite missing all four practices last week. Portis wasn't spectacular but finished with a solid 68 yards on 15 carries. Backups Ladell Betts and Shaun Alexander managed a yard each on their carries. Quarterback Jason Campbell ripped off a season-high 22-yard run that he punctuated by running over safety Patrick Watkins.

PASS DEFENSE: B-minus -- It didn't take new cornerback DeAngelo Hall long to make an impact. He intercepted Tony Romo to end Dallas' first red zone possession. Cornerback Carlos Rogers did the honors the next time, knocking the ball out of Terrell Owens' hands into those of McIntosh. H.B. Blades, subbing for the injured Marcus Washington, was burned by tight end Jason Witten, and Owens got away from Rogers and LaRon Landry to set up Dallas' first touchdown. Martellus Bennett burned Horton for the decisive 25-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

RUSH DEFENSE: C -- Marion Barber got better against Washington's defense as the game went on, handling the ball 11 straight times as the Cowboys killed the clock. Barber wound up with 114 yards o n 24 carries and a team-high six catches for 39 yards. Safety Chris Horton and cornerback Fred Smoot made early big plays against the run while linebacker Rocky McIntosh was particularly effective, forcing a fumble that Barber recovered.

SPECIAL TEAMS: B -- Rock Cartwright set up Shaun Suisham's 41-yard field goal just before intermission with a season-long 58-yard kickoff return. However, Suisham was short on a 46-yarder in the third quarter. Punter Ryan Plackemeier had a good night with a 47-yard gross average and a 35.5 net. The coverage units did a great job in their first game without former gunner Leigh Torrence, who was cut on Nov. 8 to make room for Hall. Cartwright fumbled the second half kickoff out of bounds at the 13.

COACHING: B-minus -- Jim Zorn's Redskins came out fired up, forcing a three-and-out on their first defensive series and driving 49 yards for a touchdown when the offense got the ball. However, Zorn's play calling was uninspired. Greg Blache's defense couldn't get the Cowboys off the field in the fourth quarter when Dallas ran 21 plays to just eight for Washington. Danny Smith's special teams units won their part of the battle.
