PLAYER NOTES

--RB Clinton Portis' 126 yards at Detroit widened his advantage over runner-up Adrian Peterson to 260 yards in the NFL's rushing race.

--WR Santana Moss had nine catches for 140 yards and a touchdown against the Lions. Moss improved to second in the league in touchdown catches (five), fifth in receiving yards (658) and eighth in catches (42).

--TE Chris Cooley's six catches against the Lions gave him 40 at midseason. Washington's record for catches by a tight end is 67, set by the late Jerry Smith in 1967.

--K Shaun Suisham made 4-of-5 field goal attempts at Detroit. Suisham's 16 field goals this year rank fourth in the NFL.

--SS Mike Green had six tackles, five solos, against Detroit in his first Washington start.

REPORT CARD VS. LIONS

PASSING OFFENSE: A -- Jason Campbell only threw one touchdown, but he posted a career-best 127.4 passer rating thanks to uncanny accuracy. Campbell was 23-of-28, and two of his incompletions were caught just out of bounds. WR Santana Moss had more catches (nine) and yards (140) than he had produced the previous three games. TE Chris Cooley rumbled like John Riggins in the open field. With Pro Bowl LT Chris Samuels a late scratch, the pass-blocking was shaky.

RUSHING OFFENSE: A-minus -- Rolling, rolling, rolling. Clinton Portis tied Hall of Famer O.J. Simpson by rushing for 120 yards in a fifth straight game for the second time in his career. Portis ran for 34 yards on his first two carries and 31 on his last one but managed just 61 yards on the 21 carries in between. Backup Shaun Alexander was ineffective.

PASS DEFENSE: B -- Lions WR Calvin Johnson did burn CB Carlos Rogers for a 31-yard catch to set up Rudi Johnson's early touchdown, and he broke Rogers' tackle to score from 17 yards out himself. However, Calvin Johnson's other two catches gained just nine yards. Washington managed just one sack, but its pass defense shut down the Lions until the final 11 minutes.

RUSH DEFENSE: A-minus -- The Lions don't have a great running attack, and they only ran 15 times on their 51 snaps, but the Redskins, especially LB London Fletcher, DT Kedric Golston and SS Mike Green (starting for late scratch Chris Horton) deserve credit for limiting Rudi Johnson and Kevin Smith to 33 yards on 12 carries.

SPECIAL TEAMS: B -- K Shaun Suisham nailed all five of his field-goal tries except the 50-yarder. P Ryan Plackemeier averaged 40.5 net as neither of his kicks was returned. Moss, subbing for the long-struggling Antwaan Randle El, returned a punt 80 yards for the game-breaking touchdown. KR Rock Cartwright didn't have a good day. The kickoff coverage was good.

COACHING: C -- The Redskins struggled for a third straight game against a team with a losing record -- a winless one for the second time. Washington trailed at halftime despite a 250-95 yardage margin. Coach Jim Zorn, who has been given much credit for the 6-2 first half of the season, also has to take much blame for the inability to easily dispatch bad teams.
