GAME PLAN: Washington's offense had been cruising for four games, but in last Sunday's stunning loss to St. Louis, the Redskins lost three fumbles in the first half alone. Other than a 3-yard drive that followed LaRon Landry's early fumble recovery, the Redskins were shut out until rallying for 10 points in the fourth quarter. NFL rushing leader Clinton Portis remains Washington's main weapon. Quarterback Jason Campbell has yet to throw an interception, but he and coach Jim Zorn need to find a way to get the ball to top receiver Santana Moss -- just two catches the past two games -- against Cleveland's young secondary. Shoddy blocking produced four sacks last week, but the Browns only have seven sacks.
The Redskins held the Rams to 200 yards last week, but 43 of those came on a late pass that set up the last-second winning field goal. The Browns were struggling big-time offensively until Monday's explosion against the Giants. So now the Redskins figure to have their hands full with quarterback Derek Anderson and receiver Braylon Edwards, who torched the Giants. Anderson has only been sacked eight times in five games. Eight is also the number of sacks the Redskins have managed in six games so they could really use a healthy, fully energized Jason Taylor. Powerful Jamal Lewis can still be a dangerous runner for linebackers London Fletcher and Rocky McIntosh to deal with.
MATCHUPS TO WATCH: Redskins CBs Carlos Rogers and Shawn Springs vs. Browns WR Braylon Edwards -- Facing elite receivers has been a near-weekly occurrence for the Redskins this year (Plaxico Burress, Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin, Terrell Owens, Torry Holt) so dealing with Braylon Edwards will be nothing new. The question is whether defensive coordinator Greg Blache prefers the size of veteran Shawn Springs, who often plays in the slot these days, or the quickness of Carlos Rogers as his main weapon against Edwards. Rogers was very inconsistent for two-plus years before his 2007 season ended in Week 8 with two torn knee ligaments, but he's been lights-out this year. Springs has missed two games with injuries, but still has enough hops to cover Edwards, who had 154 yards on five catches on Monday.
Redskins RB Clinton Portis vs. Browns LB D'Qwell Jackson: Portis is off to a great start, leading the NFL with 643 yards and averaging 4.7 yards a carry, his best in five years as a Redskin. He topped 120 yards the past three games, making him just the third Redskin to do so. Portis has also shown a nose for the end zone, scoring six touchdowns, including both of Washington's last week. The one-time speed back has become much more of a power runner, preferring to run inside. That's where he'll meet Jackson, who led the Browns with 10 tackles against the Giants. That's no surprise since he was second on the team in tackles as a rookie in 2006 and led the way last year. If massive nose tackle Shaun Rogers can leave Jackson unblocked, he could win the matchup.
INJURY IMPACT: With Ladell Betts (knee) out, newly-signed Shaun Alexander and holdover Rock Cartwright will back up NFL rushing leader Clinton Portis on Sunday.
If rookie safety Chris Horton can't bounce back from a sprained ankle, the Redskins will have to choose between newly-signed Mike Green and little-used Kareem Moore on Sunday.
