--Cornerback Shawn Springs knew he was a goner, because of his $6 million base salary and impending 34th birthday, as soon as Hall agreed to remain a Redskin.
"They had to do what they had to do," Springs said. "I'm glad I had a chance to play in my hometown for five years. Not many guys can do that. I'm not mad at all. The Redskins have a great organization. Virginia is still going to be my home when I'm done playing."
--With the inexperienced Chris Wilson and H.B. Blades currently penciled in at left end and strongside linebacker, Redskins coach Jim Zorn said, "We have some needs that we definitely have to take care of."
Demetric Evans won't be doing that at defensive end after signing with the 49ers on March 4, but Phillip Daniels, out all last year with two torn knee ligaments after starting the previous four season in Washington, could even though he turned 36 on March 4.
"I worked out for the coaches at Redskin Park last week and it went well," Daniels said on March 2. "I'm feeling good. I can come back this year and do what I always do. I just don't know whether the Redskins want me back (for a sixth season) or not."
QUOTE TO NOTE: "I'm a starter now and I'm ready." -- Third-year DE Chris Wilson, who's No. 1 for now on the left side after the release of Jason Taylor followed the voiding of Phillip Daniels' contract and Demetric Evans leaving as a free agent.
