Washington Redskins Notes, Quotes 2009-02-24
--OLB Marcus Washington was released by Washington in a move that will save the team around $4 million against the salary cap. The nine-year veteran has missed 10 games the past two years and had no sacks last season.

--Another winter. Another one-year contract for Ethan Albright. The 37-year-old long snapper re-signed on Feb. 13, two weeks before he could've become a free agent. But after eight years in Washington, Albright had no thought of leaving. Only offensive tackles Jon Jansen and Chris Samuels have been with the Redskins longer than Albright.

"I'm pretty excited to be back," said the perennially flawless Albright, who ended the 2007 season in the Pro Bowl. "This is the job I wanted. I enjoy playing for Danny (Smith, the special teams coach) I'm glad the Redskins liked what they saw on film enough to bring me back. I'm looking forward to competing with (former Tennessee snapper Rob Cain, whom Washington signed on Dec. 31)."

During his tumultuous nine seasons in Washington, Albright has played for four coaches -- Marty Schottenheimer, Steve Spurrier, Joe Gibbs and Jim Zorn -- snapped to 10 punters --Bryan Barker, Brett Conway (usually a kicker), Craig Jarrett, James Tuthill (usually a kicker), Tom Tupa, Andy Groom, Derrick Frost, Durant Brooks and Ryan Plackemeier (who was cut on Feb. 12, leaving only the inexperienced Zac Atterberry on the roster).

--Just over a year since he became Washington's coach, Jim Zorn is already a third of the way up the seniority pole, having been on the job longer than 11 of his 31 fellow head coaches.

"I can't believe it," said Zorn, who is still low man on the totem pole in the NFC East behind Philadelphia's Andy Reid (10 seasons), the Giants' Tom Coughlin (five) and Dallas' Wade Phillips (two). "You expect to lose four or five guys to attrition, but 11?"

QUOTE TO NOTE: "That's part of the business. You've got to build chemistry with your unit. I'll be here once we start the offseason program so I can work with whoever they bring in to be the punter." -- Long snapper Ethan Albright on preparing to work with his third punter in less than a year.
