Having surprisingly lost out to the usually tight-fisted Chicago Bears in the bidding for quarterback Jay Cutler on Thursday, the Washington Redskins now have to reassure their own quarterback, Jason Campbell, about his place in their hearts after they shopped him around the NFL. At least, that's the case for the front office and ownership.
"I have great support from the coaching staff," Campbell told WJLA-7 before the trade occurred. "They shared with me that I'm their guy. This is a business. There's always going to be speculation. It's not going to define me as a person or as a player. I'm very confident in what I can do. I'll have the best season I can whether it's here or somewhere else."
Coach Jim Zorn continually assured Campbell over the last couple of weeks that he was the Redskins' quarterback.
"Nobody wanted this trade to happen," center Casey Rabach said. "Jason's a good football player and a really good guy. He fits well with this team."
Campbell's teammates believe in his unflappability.
"I don't think it will affect Jason at all," said defensive end Phillip Daniels, who re-signed with Washington for the one-year veteran minimum on Thursday after having his more lucrative contract voided five weeks earlier. "It's good to have him back. I'm sure he's pretty happy that he's staying with the Redskins. He's got a lot to prove."
Receiver Antwaan Randle El echoed that assessment.
"It's a tough deal, bottom-line," Randle El said. "You wonder how it will affect Jason. But he's so even-keeled, so I think he'll handle it as well as anyone could."
The Redskins' failure to land Cutler allows them to hang onto the 13th overall pick in the April 25-26 draft, a choice they will likely use on a linebacker/defensive end or perhaps a right tackle.
Their current strong-side linebacker alternatives are H.B. Blades or Alfred Fincher, neither of whom is considered a starter, and their leading left ends are Daniels, 36, and Renaldo Wynn, 35. The Redskins benched oft-injured right tackle Jon Jansen, 33, last summer for Stephon Heyer, 25, but don't believe either is the answer at the spot.
