Raiders' Walker 'done for season'

Raiders' Walker 'done for season'
The Raiders bid goodbye to another big-ticket item for the rest of the season, getting little in return for their investment.

Wide receiver Javon Walker, walking with the aid of crutches and wearing a protective boot on his left foot, told reporters Thursday that he wouldn't play again this year because of an ankle injury sustained Sunday in a 17-6 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

"I'm done for the season," Walker said as he walked away. "They've got to put some screws in."

Walker is scheduled for surgery today to have two screws inserted into his ankle, a source close to the receiver said. The NFL Network reported that the bone is separated at the ankle. Walker sustained the injury at the end of a 14-yard reception late in the first quarter. He left the game but returned after having the ankle taped by trainers. He caught another pass in the third quarter, probably his last reception of the season.

"That's the stuff they don't see, how tough you are," Walker said.

Coach Tom Cable was unaware of the news at the time he addressed the media, a team spokesman said. Therefore, Cable did not comment on Walker's situation.

In eight games Walker missed the season opener because of a hamstring strain Walker caught 15 passes for 196 yards and one touchdown. He had two receptions or fewer in seven games.

His shining moment came during a 16-13 overtime victory over the New York Jets on Oct. 19, when he caught five passes for 75 yards and a touchdown.

In March, the Raiders signed Walker to a six-year contract worth $55 million if it holds up. He received an $11 million signing bonus and $1 million in base salary this season. He also is due a $5 million roster bonus in the off-season, as well as $4 million in base salary next season.

The news comes a week after the Raiders cut ties with cornerback DeAngelo Hall. Waiving Hall cost the Raiders $8 million for eight games but freed them from paying him $16.55 million more guaranteed if he sustained an injury before season's end.

Former Raiders coach Lane Kiffin was critical of Walker's conditioning during early mini-camps. In mid-June, Walker was beaten, robbed and hospitalized in Las Vegas after a night of partying.

On Aug. 2, Kiffin confirmed an ESPN report that said Walker had discussed retirement with Raiders owner Al Davis and offered to give back his signing bonus, only to be talked out of it.

When Hall was waived, there was speculation Walker also was in danger of being cut for lack of production. Cable put to rest that notion the next day.

"Let's be real about it," Cable said. "Javon has really brought his game to a whole new level the last few weeks, whether it's on the practice field or in the games. Javon Walker is in no way not going to be a part of this Football team.''

Defensive end Derrick Burgess (triceps), linebacker Ricky Brown (groin), center Jake Grove (calf) and backup quarterback Andrew Walter (ankle) missed practice. Burgess didn't report any effects from practicing Wednesday for the first time since Oct. 6, Cable said, and he is listed as questionable for Sunday's game at Miami.

Receiver Chaz Schilens (ankle), quarterback JaMarcus Russell (knee), running back Darren McFadden (toe) and strong safety Gibril Wilson (back) were limited in practice. "He's ready to go," is how Cable responded to McFadden's status.

McFadden, who missed the past three games because of turf-toe injuries, said: "I feel great. (Wednesday), a lot of the trainers were telling me I had a different pep about myself at practice. My whole demeanor changed being back out there."

Russell took a majority of the reps in practice and appears healthy enough to start Sunday, Cable said.

Recently acquired Justin Miller worked on kick returns and might handle that duty Sunday, Cable said.

"We have a great need there," Cable said in response to recent struggles by Johnnie Lee Higgins. "He's excited, we're excited."

Higgins will remain the primary punt returner, the coach said.
